José Montero PhD Joins the Team

José’s journey began in Spain, where he earned a PhD in physics specialising in transparent conductive materials and chromogenic technologies. His growing interest in dynamic glass led him to Sweden in 2013, where he joined the Ångström Laboratory at Uppsala University – one of the world’s leading research institutions in the field. There, he conducted research in chromogenic technologies while also teaching courses such as Energy Flows and Materials in the Built Environment, equipping future engineers with expertise in energy flows, daylight management, visual comfort, and optics.

José has always been drawn to nature, and his passion for sustainability has shaped his career. Rather than pursuing biology, he chose physics, seeing it as a powerful tool to develop sustainable solutions and reduce greenhouse gas emissions – particularly in the property and construction sector. After years of research and teaching, moving into the industry was a natural next step, allowing him to apply his expertise in real-world settings and contribute to tangible, impactful solutions.

— Windows are often the weakest link in a building’s energy efficiency. As a leading player in Europe, ChromoGenics presents a unique opportunity for me to truly make an impact – turning research into real-world solutions that reduce energy consumption and enhance sustainability on a large scale, José explains.

As a Senior Product and Process Specialist, José will focus on process and product development –refining sputtering techniques and optimising production efficiency – as well as on optical design and optical modelling. His deep knowledge will be instrumental in the continuous advancement and refinement of ChromoGenics’ dynamic glass solutions.

José believes the next five to ten years will bring significant advancements in adaptive glass technology, further improving the energy efficiency of buildings worldwide. His long-term goal? Driving sustainable development within the glass industry and creating solutions that benefit both people and the planet.

— Today, most windows are designed either for summer or winter conditions leading to unnecessary resource waste. With dynamic glass, we can harness solar energy when we need it and reduce excess heat when we don’t, says José.
