From Summer Job to Seasoned Veteran
For more than 35 years, Markus Rumpf has been helping architects, façade consultants, and building owners bring innovative glazing solutions into landmark projects across Europe. Throughout his career, he has held senior roles at established industry players including Saint-Gobain, Glas Trösch, and Sedak, focusing on high-performance glazing and solar control solutions. Today, he brings this extensive market experience to his role leading ChromoGenics in the DACH region.
"I was first introduced to early switchable glass technologies over twenty years ago. Back then, the potential was clear, but the market wasn't quite ready. Today, driven by climate realities and updated regulations, smart glazing has evolved from an emerging technology into an essential component of modern building design," Markus explains.
Updating Europe's Building Stock
Having represented ChromoGenics for the past five years, Markus has seen the company’s presence grow from early installations in Northern Germany to an established portfolio of completed projects across the DACH region. A major reason demand continues to rise is the urgent need to modernize existing European real estate. Stricter EU energy requirements and climate targets mean property owners are seeking practical, reliable ways to upgrade windows and façades without undergoing disruptive structural renovations. "Europe has a vast volume of older buildings that require upgrades to meet current energy standards, but traditional mechanical blinds can be complex or costly to integrate into ageing structures. Recent warmer seasons have notably increased interest in electrochromic glazing as property owners actively seek solutions to lower operational energy consumption and reduce cooling demands.
"Switzerland continues to be a pioneer in adopting this technology, as investors frequently prioritise long-term performance and sustainability. Germany is following closely, driven by updated energy codes and clear carbon-reduction targets. Austria represents a smaller, but steadily growing market with similar priorities," notes Rumpf.
Nordic Manufacturing offers Supply Chain Security
In addition to functional performance, supply chain reliability has become a critical consideration for European developers. As the only actor in the world, ChromoGenics produces the electrochromic film itself in Sweden, allowing it to be laminated and assembled into an IGU close to the construction site in Central Europe. This not only significantly reduces CO₂ emissions but also lowers transport costs and ensures high quality.
